Knowing When to Step Back

Knowing when to step back can be one of the hardest things for creative people. Writers, artists, musicians—we chase perfection. We obsess over details. We convince ourselves that if we just keep pushing, we’ll find the right words, the right brushstroke, the right note.

Creativity isn’t a straight path. Some days, the words spill onto the page effortlessly, the brushstrokes land just right, the melody writes itself. Other days, nothing works. The blank page stays blank. Every sentence feels wrong. We tweak and revise and overthink, convinced that pushing through will fix it. But sometimes, stepping away is exactly what we need. When we return, the muse is waiting, stronger than before.

I’ve been stuck in that loop with my Ireland travel series. I didn’t want to write anything new until I knew how to finish it. As I visited the Cliffs of Moher, something shifted, hitting me as fiercely as the waves against the shores below.

Trying to put that into words has felt impossible. Every attempt comes up short. How do you capture the weight of a moment like that? The way something shifts inside you, irreversibly? As I knew this trip would.

So instead of forcing it, I’m letting it rest. Giving myself time to sit with it, to let the memory settle into its proper shape. In the meantime, other stories call. Other inspirations rise to the surface.

This isn’t giving up,it’s trusting that when I return to Ireland’s winding roads and emerald landscapes in my writing. I’ll bring fresh eyes and renewed energy. I trust that the words will come when they’re ready. They will be full of the depth and clarity I feel now.

Because the muse never really leaves. She just waits for the right moment to strike again.

Until then, my journey continues, just along the beautifully unknown path.
